Anthurium marcusianum is a distinctive rupicolous (rock-dwelling) Anthurium by its elongate, erect stem and ovate leaves with cordate bases. The plant’s foliage displays a chartaceous (paper-like) texture when fresh and becomes coriaceous (leathery) upon drying. It features a unique inflorescence with a lanceolate spathe and a purplish spadix, further accentuated by tepals that transition in colour from purplish to whitish as they mature. These botanical details make it a fascinating species for indoor plant cultivation.
This species is native to Espírito Santo State, Brazil, where it is found on shaded rocky outcrops within the submontane dense ombrophilous (rain-loving) forests. Its preference for high humidity and indirect light mirrors its natural habitat, making it suitable for indoor care under controlled conditions.
Native to
Anthurium marcusianum hails from the Atlantic Forest fragments of Espírito Santo, Brazil, specifically thriving on shaded rocky outcrops in submontane rainforests. This habitat supports its unique ecological adaptations as a rupicolous species.
Water
Water consistently to maintain evenly moist conditions, allowing the top 2–3 cm of the substrate to dry slightly between watering. Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter to mimic its natural rocky habitat.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal for Anthurium marcusianum. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, which can damage its delicate leaves. The plant can tolerate lower light levels but thrives best with filtered light conditions.
Humidity
This species requires high humidity levels of 70% or more to thrive. Use a pebble tray, humidifier, or frequent misting to achieve this. Due to its compact size and humidity needs, it is an excellent candidate for terrariums or other controlled environments.
Temperature
Maintain temperatures between 18–24°C, avoiding exposure to cold drafts or sudden fluctuations. Temperatures below 15°C can harm the plant, as it is adapted to consistently warm conditions.
Growth and Care Notes
Anthurium marcusianum’s unique ecological adaptations and compact growth habit make it a fascinating plant for indoor cultivation. By providing high humidity, well-draining soil, and moderate warmth, this species can be successfully grown as a distinctive and rare addition to indoor plant collections.
