Anthurium forgetii x nigrolaminum 'Gigi'

Anthurium forgetii x nigrolaminum 'Gigi' is a compact hybrid with dark velvet leaves, rounded foliage and pale to silvery veins. It combines the closed upper leaf shape of Anthurium forgetii with the darker leaf colour of Anthurium nigrolaminum.

Mature leaves are usually dark and velvety, with pale veins. Shape can vary: some leaves become broad and rounded, while others mature slightly longer or darker.

Dark rounded hybrid foliage

  • Growth: Compact Anthurium hybrid with a small-to-medium crown.
  • Leaf shape: Rounded velvet leaves with a closed or nearly closed upper outline.
  • Colour: Dark green to deep-toned mature leaves.
  • Veins: Pale to silvery veins over a velvet surface.
  • Leaf variation: Leaf roundness, darkness and vein strength can differ between plants.
  • Root care: Warmth, steady moisture and an airy Anthurium mix.

Rounded leaves and darker colour

A. forgetii gives the hybrid its rounded leaf influence, while A. nigrolaminum adds a darker velvet surface. The plant stays compact, with dark leaves and pale veins.

A settled root system usually leads to firmer petioles and broader new leaves. Young plants may look smaller or less rounded at first, then produce broader leaves with more visible veins as the roots fill the pot.

Anthurium 'Gigi' care

  • Light: Give bright filtered light. Dark velvet leaves develop well in steady indirect light.
  • Watering: Water when the upper layer of mix starts to dry and the pot feels lighter.
  • Substrate: Use a fine-to-medium chunky mix with bark, coco chips or coarse fibre, pumice or perlite.
  • Pot fit: Use a pot close to the root size and avoid oversized containers.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves open smoothly, especially while still soft.
  • Temperature: Warm indoor conditions around 20–28 °C support consistent new growth.
  • Feeding: Feed with a weak fertiliser during active growth. Rinse the mix with low-mineral water if salts build up.
  • Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots fill the container or the mix starts to break down.
  • Leaf care: Clean mature leaves gently with a soft damp cloth. New velvet leaves mark easily.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division or stem sections with nodes. New plants from seed may not keep the same leaf shape, colour or texture.

Common issues with Anthurium 'Gigi'

  • Soft yellowing leaves: Check the lower pot for dense, wet substrate or cool roots.
  • Brown tips: Usually linked to watering swings, mineral buildup, low humidity or stressed roots.
  • Deformed new growth: Inspect the newest leaf and new leaf sheath for thrips, mites or physical damage.
  • Dull foliage: Dust, weak light or root stress can make the leaf surface look flat.
  • Marks on young leaves: Soft tissue can mark when water sits on it or when leaves are handled while unfurling.

Flowers on Anthurium 'Gigi'

Flowering is possible once the plant is mature. The inflorescence has the usual Anthurium spathe and spadix, with details that can vary in this hybrid.

Pets and handling

Like other Anthuriums, 'Gigi' contains calcium oxalate crystals. Plant material can irritate the mouth and throat if eaten, and sap may bother sensitive skin or eyes. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

Name meaning

Anthurium refers to the spadix. forgetii honours Monsieur Forget, and nigrolaminum points to dark leaf-blade colour. 'Gigi' is the name used for this hybrid.

Works great for sublimation. Get plenty of sheets. Great value for the price. The paper is pretty thick and seems to hold a good amount of ink without smearing.

My go-to sublimation paper for crafting
Size: 8.5"x11"
I've used several sublimation papers, and this one has worked really well for my crafting projects. The colors transfer bright and vibrant, and the images come out crisp with good detail when using the proper sublimation printer and ink. The paper feeds smoothly through my printer and feels like a good quality weight—not too thin and not overly thick. I've used it for tumblers, keychains, and other sublimation projects, and I've been happy with the results. I also appreciate getting 110 sheets in one pack because it lasts a while, especially when working on multiple projects at once. Overall, this is a reliable sublimation paper that gives consistent results and is great for crafters or small business owners.
