Lactuca sativa Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce

Lactuca sativa Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce is a legendary heirloom loose-leaf variety, cherished for its rapid growth, delicate texture, and exceptional heat tolerance. Growing to about 9 to 12 inches tall with a spread of 10 to 12 inches, this variety is perfect for kitchen gardens, raised beds, and container plantings where reliable, early harvests are desired. Unlike heading lettuces, Black Seeded Simpson forms a loose, upright rosette of crinkled, light-green leaves that can be harvested as baby greens in as little as 3 weeks or allowed to mature for a full-sized harvest in just 45 days.

Culinary and Practical Uses

  • The crinkled, chartreuse leaves possess a crisp, juicy texture and a sweet, mild flavor that never turns bitter, making them the ultimate base for fresh spring salads.
  • Excellent for "cut-and-come-again" harvesting; outer leaves can be snipped for sandwiches and garnishes while the center continues to grow.
  • Rich in Vitamin A and K, this variety adds both nutritional value and a vibrant pop of bright green color to tacos, burgers, and wraps.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: Large, frilly, light green to yellow-green leaves with a crumpled surface; the texture is famously tender and delicate compared to stiffer romaine types.
  • Growth Habit: Open, upright, loose-leaf rosette that does not form a tight heart; renowned for being one of the most heat-tolerant and bolt-resistant leaf lettuces.
  • Flowers: Produces tall central stalks with small yellow dandelion-like flowers if allowed to bolt in extreme heat, signaling the end of the vegetative cycle.
  • Seeds: Harvested after the flower fluff dries; true to its name, this variety produces distinctively black seeds, unlike the white seeds of many other Simpson strains.

Growing Requirements

  • Sun: Thrives in full sun during cool weather but benefits significantly from partial shade during warmer months to prolong the harvest.
  • Soil: Prefers loose, cool, fertile soil rich in organic matter; well-draining soil is essential to prevent rot.
  • Water: Requires consistent, even watering; lettuce is shallow-rooted and needs moisture to maintain its sweet flavor and crisp texture.
  • Spacing: Plant seeds in wide rows or thin plants to 6 to 12 inches apart to encourage full-sized bunches; crowd closer for baby leaf production.
  • Maintenance: Practice succession planting every 2 weeks for a continuous supply; mulch to keep soil cool and weed-free.

Fun way to learn good behavior!
Format: Paperback
Good value for the price, you get 7 short stories with this book & the illustrations are very well done. If your child's attention span can't handle the entire book you can still manage a few. Lots of funny action pictures to hold their interest, my 4 1/2 yr old son flips through the book on his own just to look at the pictures and they are descriptive enough to follow the story without reading the words. It's a favorite book to listen to because he is of age to get in trouble and to be held accountable, so he likes to see that he is not the only one. His favorite story is Pig Will and Pig Won't. Hint: Say "I won't" with an angry piggy snort! This cracks kids up, they will anticipate the words and snort along with you "I won't"! Sometimes works to change a defiant or lazy mood when I ask him to do something, I will ask "is my D. a pig will or pig won't today?".. helps to snort a little! Can't overuse it though..

too advanced for 18month old, but great book!
Format: Paperback
I love Richard Scarry! I bought this book for my 18 month old, who we are trying to teach to say please and thank you. Unfortunately this book is just way too advanced for her. It's full on stories rather than short pieces. I know, the suggested age was older but that is true for a lot of books that really can be enjoyed by younger tots. This one will be put away for at least another 6 months, and then kept on the shelf of "appropriate" but not in her board book box. However, I really like that she can now say "Lowly" :) Richard Scarry is one of my favorite authors/illustrators from childhood and I'm glad to have this book. It just is beyond the reach of my LO at this age.

A Favorite!
Format: Board book
Having loved Richard Scarry books as a child in the 70's, I was thrilled when he regained popularity in the 90's when we were raising our children. Now I get to share this beloved classic with my granddaughter. She LOVES her Richard Scarry books and this one is wonderful. Every page has so many beautifully illustrated details so there are always new things to look at and discover. She is 18 months old and the Richard Scarry books have been instrumental in helping her vocabulary, now over 200 words. Highly recommend that you add this awesome book to your baby's library and read, read, read to your baby every chance you get!
