The string of turtles, known as Peperomia prostrata, is a delightful and compact trailing houseplant cherished for its intricate, turtle shell-like foliage. The plant’s cascading habit enhances its charm, making it an ideal choice for hanging baskets, fairy gardens, container gardens, and terrariums. Its delicate vines and low-maintenance requirements have earned it widespread popularity in the houseplant community, where it adds charm and visual interest to any collection.

The evergreen perennial plant’s common name comes from the shape of its tiny leaves, which resemble miniature turtle shells strung together on delicate vines. Each tiny leaf features intricate, multi-colored patterns across its surface. The unique leaf shape resembles the shell of a miniature turtle, contributing to its popularity in various decorative settings.

As the plant matures, the colors soften, eventually becoming bicolored, with dark green leaves contrasted with lighter green tones.

Despite this change, the String of Turtles retains its enduring charm, making it a favorite among plant enthusiasts.

Native to Brazil, the String of Turtles Plant has small, rounded leaves adorned with intricate, light-green veining against a deep green backdrop, closely mimicking the appearance of turtle shells.

Its vines can grow up to 12 inches long, making it perfect for cascading displays. While small, its dense foliage creates a lush, eye-catching presence.

The String of Turtles is a compact plant with a slow growth rate, taking 3 to 5 years to reach full maturity. Its small size makes it an excellent choice for those with limited space.

The string of turtle flowers is typically white or cream-colored and lacks a strong fragrance. The string of turtle plants blooms once or twice a year during its growing season, which lasts from spring to summer. The plant flower is a small, erect, brown spike that resembles a tail. Its unique foliage adds texture and interest to any indoor garden. Like many houseplants, it can contribute to cleaner indoor air by absorbing toxins.

When and How to Water Your String of Turtles Plant

The drought-tolerant string of turtle plants thrives with minimal watering, thanks to its semi-succulent leaves that retain moisture. Overwatering is one of the most common issues with this plant, as its delicate roots are prone to rot. Overwatering can also lead to leaf drop. It’s best to let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out completely between waterings. A good rule of thumb is to check the soil with your finger before adding water to ensure it’s necessary.

In the spring and summer, during its active growing season, the String of turtles requires slightly more frequent watering. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry, allowing any excess water to drain completely. Depending on your home’s temperature and humidity, watering every 1-2 weeks should suffice. Always use well-draining soil to prevent water from sitting in the pot, which could lead to root rot.

In the fall and winter, during the dormant season, the plant’s water needs decrease significantly. Water sparingly, about once every 3-4 weeks, ensuring the soil remains slightly dry for extended periods. This reduced watering aligns with the plant’s slower metabolic rate during colder months, preventing overwatering and root damage.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your String of Turtles

When grown indoors, the String of turtles thrives in bright, indirect light. It prefers 6-8 hours of light daily but should be shielded from direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate, patterned leaves.

Place it near a north- or east-facing window for gentle morning light or filtered sunlight throughout the day.

If natural light is insufficient, using a grow light can help maintain its health and vibrant foliage.

For outdoor cultivation, the String of turtle plants should be placed in a shaded or semi-shaded area, receiving 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight daily.

Direct afternoon sun should be avoided, as it can lead to leaf burning.

A covered patio or under the dappled shade of trees is ideal for maintaining optimal light exposure while protecting the plant from harsh sunlight.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The String of Turtles requires a well-draining soil mix, ideally a mix designed for succulents. A mix specifically designed for indoor plants or tropical plants is ideal. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark ensures good aeration and prevents waterlogging, which is essential for its shallow roots.

Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil, opens in a new tab that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive.

Fertilizing the plant during its growing season in the spring, with a diluted liquid NPK fertilizer specifically for houseplants promotes healthy growth. Apply fertilizer once a year during this period, but avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup in the soil. Fertilization is unnecessary during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant. Over-fertilizing during this time can stress the plant and lead to poor health.

Repotting your String of Turtles every 2-3 years in the spring is recommended, especially when it becomes pot-bound. This not only provides fresh nutrients but also gives the roots more space to grow, promoting overall plant health.

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, the String of Turtles thrives in temperatures between 65-75°F, during the day and should not be exposed to temperatures below 55°F at night. To ensure your turtle plant remains healthy, avoid placing it near heating or cooling vents, fireplaces, or drafty windows, as these can cause temperature fluctuations that stress the plant. It prefers moderate humidity but can tolerate standard household levels. Keep it away from cold drafts, heaters, or air conditioners that can cause temperature fluctuations. Maintain bright, indirect light to support its patterned foliage.

For outdoor cultivation, the plant is best suited for USDA Zones 10-12, where temperatures rarely drop below 40°F.

It prefers humid environments and indirect sunlight, similar to its native tropical rainforest habitat. Ensure the plant is protected from frost, as it is not cold-hardy.

In terms of humidity, String of Turtles prefers a high-humidity environment, typically above 50%. This mimics its natural tropical habitat and helps the plant maintain its lush, vibrant appearance. To achieve this, you can place the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles, ensuring the pot is above the water level to prevent root rot.

Alternatively, using a humidifier nearby can help maintain the necessary humidity levels, especially during dry winter months.

Wildlife – Peperomia prostrata Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The String of Turtles can attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and small insects that are drawn to its subtle flowers. Although this plant is primarily admired for its foliage, these pollinators contribute to its ecological benefits.

Butterflies
Bees
Hummingbirds
Lady Bugs
Multi Pollinators
Other Birds

According to the ASPCA, the String of Turtles is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans, making it a pet-friendly choice for households. While it poses no significant health risks, ingestion of plant material may cause mild discomfort in pets due to its fibrous nature.

How to Propagate Your String of Turtles Plants

The string of turtles can be propagated through stem cuttings, as this method ensures healthy new growth. Take cutting with at least 2-3 nodes and place it in water or directly onto moist soil. Having a few leaves attached to the stem cuttings is crucial for successful propagation. Ensure the nodes are in contact with the soil or water to encourage root development.

Once roots have formed, transfer the cutting to a small pot with well-draining soil. Keep the soil slightly moist during the initial weeks to promote root establishment, and place the pot in bright, indirect light.

Pruning Your String of Turtles for Optimal Growth

Pruning is essential for maintaining the health and appearance of your String of Turtles. Regularly removing dead or damaged leaves and stems prevents the spread of disease and encourages new growth. Use a pair of clean scissors or pruning shears to cut back long stems and trim any leggy growth, helping to maintain a bushy, attractive shape.

The best time to prune your String of Turtles is during the growing season, which spans spring and summer. Pruning during this period encourages new growth and prevents the plant from becoming too leggy. By keeping your plant well-pruned, you’ll ensure it remains healthy and vibrant.

A HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL TAPESTRY OF EMOTIONS

With an almost dreamlike, fairy-tale quality to her every word, Mia Sheridan weaves a hauntingly beautiful tapestry of darkness and light, love and loss, pain and atonement, with a tale that transports the reader to a place where true love never dies, and where a spark of hope can find its way through even the smallest of cracks in an old, stone wall. Set against the vivid background of the mystical city of New Orleans, this is the story of two lonely hearts who find safe harbour in each other’s arms, but as they work together to unlock a mystery from the past, they begin to discover that the greatest battles sometimes lie within us, and that is where they must be fought. As always, Mia Sheridan’s storytelling is exquisite, transcendent, soulful, and just stunning. 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥—𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥—𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘢 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦. Shortly after moving to New Orleans to pursue a career in ballet, Clara Campbell finds herself awash in loneliness and uncertainty, the company of an elderly neighbour becoming her only respite from the melancholy that threatens to overwhelm her daily. And it is during one of her visits to her elderly friend that Clara learns of a century-and-a-half-old legend held within the beautiful, broken structures of Windisle Plantation. From the moment Clara hears the story of a beautiful young slave who fell for a handsome southern soldier, and whose spirits are said to be still trapped in the very place where their love affair ended so tragically, she begins to feel a strange pull to Windisle, beckoning her to explore the secrets held within its shadows. But instead of finding ghosts there, Clara meets a mysterious stranger hiding behind its walls. Holding himself responsible for the tragic events that led to his own scarred appearance, Jonah spends his days drowning in sorrow and loneliness, but from the moment he hears a young woman’s selfless wish whispered through the cracks in an old, stone wall, he becomes bewitched by her. They continue to meet week after week, spending time just talking, and sharing their innermost thoughts and fears with one another, even though that stone wall continues to stand between them. “𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘵. 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵, 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭.” As they slowly begin to piece the past together, getting closer and closer to setting the star-crossed lovers free from the curse trapping them at Windisle, Clara and Jonah also begin to fall in love. But it soon becomes clear to Clara that her velvet-voiced ‘wish collector’ might be living in a cage of his own making—never too far, but always far enough to be out of reach to her, their reality in so many ways echoing the very curse they are trying to break. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘸𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘴𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩. The depth of emotion that Mia Sheridan is able to conjure on the page is breathtaking, her nuanced prose brimming with symbolism and sensuality, but her true gift lies in creating complex, fractured characters that have been bruised by life, but who find unexpected glimmers of hope and grace when they least expect it. The novel builds slowly with absolutely gorgeous language and setting, and with a dual timeline structure that sways gently from past to present, braiding the narratives together little by little, we unravel the past at the same time as the future unfolds before us. Both beautiful and tragic, this is the kind of story that sticks with you long after the final page. “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘶𝘴, 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. 𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘦?”

This was a beautiful modern day re-telling of Beauty and the Beast
Format: Kindle
This was a beautiful modern day re-telling of Beauty and the Beast set in an old plantation homestead in New Orleans. Jonah is a hotshot lawyer who was climbing his way to top when a case he was involved in led to a tragedy that ended his life as he knew it. He now lives a lonely life in his family home, the Windisle Plantation. This is a heritage building with a tragic tale behind it. Clara moves to New Orleans when she is selected for the prestigious ballet company there. She hears about the Windisle Plantation and the mystery behind the ‘weeping wall’ and seems to get fixated on finding out the truth of the love story behind it. After researching as much as she can, Clara turns up at the weeping wall with a wish. It is rumoured that if you write a wish and poke it into the wall it may be granted. However, Clara’s wish is like no other before her and she is shocked to discover that there is a person living behind the wall. Jonah has never interacted with anyone who visits his wall but Clara’s wish stands out. His quiet life has been interrupted by this exquisite, beautiful girl who seems hell bent on getting to know him. There may be a big wall between them but over time a beautiful friendship forms between them, one that seems to overcome the physical barriers. Jonah begins to realise just how lonely he has been. Clara enlists Jonah to help her solve the mystery behind the weeping wall. In doing so she is also trying to encourage him to come back into the light, rather than hiding away in the dark. Jonah finds himself saying and doing things he never thought he would do again. Clara’s persistence and determination is changing things for him. I absolutely loved getting caught up in this fairy tale filled with mystery, trepidation and a beautiful friendship between a beast and his beauty ☺

Magical!
Format: Kindle
Wowww. This is the first book in a long time that I did not want to end. I was entranced by Jonah and Clara’s story, and the whimsical romance that came along with it. The Wish Collector is sort of a Beauty and The Beast meets Phantom of the Opera vibe. Clara is a ballerina new to the New Orleans dance company. She just moved to this vibrant, mysterious city and has while trying to acclimate to her new surroundings, she hears the tale of The Weeping Wall, a local New Orleans legend that surrounds a tragic love story from the 1800’s. Clara is so intrigued that she decides to visit the site of this lore, the supposedly abandoned Windisle Plantation home. Jonah was once on top of the world as New Orleans royalty. A young lawyer on the fast track at a prominent law firm, handsome, the toast of every dinner—until tragedy strikes, and he shamefully has closed himself inside the walls of Windisle. It’s here that he meets Clara—and so our story begins! This story has mystery, intrigue, local legend, and so much whimsy. I could not put this down!! I absolutely loved the dynamic between Jonah and Clara. This was very much a romance filled with so much longing and emotion. There is definitely spice, but this is a slow burn. The circumstances surrounding Jonah make him feel like a monster and he struggles badly with his feelings for Clara—le swoooon! The tale of the Weeping Wall is a secondary love story with a shroud of mystery that Clara is determined to solve. She and Jonah work together to try to put puzzle pieces together, all the while writing their own love story ❤️ I absolutely adored this book, and I think would make for a great movie. Can’t wait to read it again!!

Great new author for me!
Format: Kindle
A beautiful story from start to finish. A New Orlean’s setting added to the enchantment. Early American history was portrayed so well - heart wrenching, yet such an important part of the story, leading to the lovely heart warming finish.

Such a wonderful story
Format: Paperback
Mia knows how to write a book! This one did not disappoint. Clara moves to New Orleans and has no one. She’s is starting fresh in the city as a ballet dancer. She had to leave her family behind and come alone for health reasons. Jonah has lived here his whole life. His life used to look a lot different. Successful and handsome he had anything he wanted. Until it all went wrong. Jonah now spends his life behind the walls of his families plantation. He hides away and regrets some of his life choices. Clara shows up at a wall bordering his plantation to make a wish. Except she makes a wish to help someone else. Jonah and Clara form a quick friendship and a bond that is strong. As time goes on Jonah realizes he needs to come back to the world and he can make it a better place. He doesn’t need to listen to all the hate. He needs to keep his eyes on those that love him. This story was so good. It showed how people grow and change and how they fight to do the right thing (most of the time) and want to make those the care about happy. This showed the fight that we all have for love and those we love. Such a good book!!!
