Origin
The Dragon Fruit cactus, also known as pitaya or pitahaya, is native to Central and South America. In its natural habitat, it grows as a climbing cactus that attaches to trees or rocks. It is now cultivated worldwide, both for its decorative value and for its striking fruits.
Characteristics
This cactus belongs to the genus Hylocereus and has several species and hybrids, each with its own fruit color. The skin ranges from bright pink to yellow, while the flesh is white (Hylocereus undatus), red (Hylocereus costaricensis) or pink (Hylocereus megalanthus) can be. The fruits are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber, but are low in fat and calories. Another special characteristic is the flower: large, fragrant and only at night Blooming - a rare spectacle that often lasts only one night.
Care
The Dragon Fruit cactus is relatively easy to care for. It likes plenty of light, preferably direct sunlight, and needs well-drained soil. In summer the soil may remain slightly moist, but in winter sparing watering is sufficient. With proper care, the plant can flower and even form fruit after a few years, especially with adequate light and warmth. A climbing support or rack is recommended, as this cactus naturally meanders upward.
